What is a King Crab?
The King Crab, scientifically known as Paralithodes camtschaticus, belongs to the family of spiny crabs and is mainly found in the cold waters of the Bering Sea, the northern Pacific Ocean, and the Norwegian coastal waters. Our Kingcrabs come from Norway, where they grow optimally in the clean, cold waters and are imported from there to our "Crusta Oceans" (our purging system), ensuring the quality is maintained! The technique used by the Norwegians to fish is very similar to the method used in Alaska. The crabs are caught using pots. However, Norwegian fishermen distinguish themselves from fishermen in Alaska or Russia by using significantly smaller boats. These boats catch a maximum of 100 king crabs per day. The kingcrab is one of the largest crustaceans and can reach a wingspan of nearly two meters and a weight of over 10 kilograms. For frozen production, the king crab is cooked and frozen in a factory after being caught. During cooking, the crab's brown color changes to red, which is why it is called kingcrab. Their large, powerful claws are a source of delicious, firm meat that is highly prized in the culinary world.
Habitat and Behavior
Kingcrabs live on the seabed, usually at depths ranging from 20 to 200 meters. Apparently are they also very fun animals, because they live in groups together. They prefer muddy, sandy, or rocky bottoms where they can hide and hunt. Kingcrabs are omnivores and feed on a variety of organisms such as mollusks, fish, and algae. During the spawning season, they migrate to shallower waters, making it easier to catch them.
Why Choose King Crab?
This crab is known for its delicate, sweet taste and firm texture, making it a favorite choice for chefs and gourmets worldwide. The meat is rich in protein, low in fat, and contains essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, making it not only delicious but also healthy. Kingcrab is ideal for various cooking methods, including steaming, baking, grilling, and even raw in sushi.
Ecology and Sustainability
The Kingcrab plays an important role in its ecosystem and is carefully managed to prevent overfishing. By collaborating with sustainable fisheries, we ensure that our products are not only of the highest quality but also contribute to ocean conservation. Population management includes strict quotas, seasonal fishing restrictions, and protected areas to ensure that this beautiful product is preserved for future generations. For example, no fishing is done in April because the crab is in its molting period. This means that the king crab loses its shell and grows a new one, making them very weak, and measures are therefore taken by the fishermen.
